While Halloween of 2018 erased the legacy of sequels and reboots, Halloween Kills brings back a vital scene from the Erased Cannon.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Halloween Kills, currently in theaters and available to stream on Peacock.

With multiple reshoots and reboots redefining the franchise throughout its 40-plus-year history, the Halloween The franchise is perhaps one of the more convoluted slasher movie series when it comes to its own continuity. 2018 Halloween chose to rationalize this by removing everything but the original 1978 film from its official canon, including the subplot introduced in the 1981s Halloween ii that Laurie Strode was the long-lost sister of Michael Myers. And this revised continuity has largely been verified in Halloween kills, with the exception of the occasional Easter Egg and nod to previous films in the franchise except for a scene taken straight from Halloween ii which is incorporated in Halloween kills.

As well as bringing back the surviving cast from the 2018 film and Laurie herself, Halloween kills features many classic characters, each with their own vendetta for what the form cost them on that fateful night of 1978. In addition to a vengeful Tommy Doyle and his fellow survivor Lindsay Wallace, Sheriff Leigh Brackett is still haunted By what form cost him forty years ago, with his teenage daughter Annie among Myers’ first victims when the masked serial killer escaped Smith’s Grove Sanatorium. And as Brackett, who now works at Haddonfield Memorial Hospital as a security guard, recalls his own experiences in 1978, archival footage of much of the non-canonical Halloween ii is revisited.

Halloween ii began immediately where the 1978 film left off as Shape, having survived six shots from Doctor Sam Loomis, fled before setting her sights on Laurie as she recovered at Haddonfield Memorial Hospital . While the events of the film are largely eliminated from Halloween kills‘continuity, the archive footage of Halloween ii where Sheriff Brackett discovers that the body of his murdered daughter Annie is reinserted into the barrel, the grieving lawyer silently closing his dead daughter’s eyes before leaving the scene of the crime to inform his wife of the tragedy.

Obviously, the inclusion of this brief scene does not magically validate the status of Halloween ii back in the new canon, but it gives Brackett a good character moment and nods to longtime fans of the franchise by directly citing the past film. And it also helps inform Brackett to join Tommy’s mob at the end of Halloween kills to finally get the chance to avenge his daughter, putting multiple hits in the form during the 2021 film’s climactic showdown for a more than forty-year-old showdown.

Michael Myers escapes fire in Halloween Kills

Sheriff Brackett has been largely sidelined in Halloween ii, appearing only at the beginning and end of the 1981 film, before disappearing completely from the classic timeline. Halloween kills gives Brackett a lot more to do while also restoring a quick preview of an obviously erased sequel. And while Halloween ii largely remains out of the new continuity, the inclusion of the scene opens up the possibility that other excised story moments will return to the franchise in time for its grand finale. Halloween ends next year, making the revised continuity an a la carte approach to picking out what remains intact for the cannon. Don’t wait for the Cult of Thorn to return to the big screen anytime soon.

To see this piece of cannon restored, Halloween Kills is now in theaters and currently available to stream on Peacock.
