A medieval painting from the early 15th century bears an eerie resemblance to the first-generation grass-type Oddish Pokémon.
A medieval piece of art has surfaced, depicting an eerie painting of a blue vegetable with a face, giving it an eerie resemblance to the iconic Pokémon Oddish.
The image was provided by Daily Art, which detailed the known history of the strange medieval art piece. Entitled Blue Root, the image was found in a 15th-century Italian herbal book detailing various plants. Although the artist is unknown, the piece is currently owned by Penn Libraries. Of course, for fans of the Pokémon franchise, the eerily familiar painting bears a remarkable resemblance to the first-generation Pokémon Oddish.
According to Daily Art, the particular artistic style choices used for Blue Root were rather conventional for the time it was created. Believed to have been painted in the early 15th century, it was common for the artwork of such objects to be depicted with fantastic faces or elements. It is believed that the collection in which it was found grew enriched throughout the century, as suggested by the various artistic styles found in the later folios. These images were less likely to be mistaken for Pokémon, being drawn as more naturalistic representations of the specimens.
Oddish is an iconic grass-type Pokémon that was implemented in early franchise entries Red and Green Pokémon, localized as Red and Blue Pokémon in the West. The small, blue and green, vegetable-like Pokémon is a fairly common type of grass that has appeared in several generations of games in addition to many episodes of the anime. Its design is said to have been inspired by the mythical Mandrake, known to create a screeching cry when pulled from the ground. This comparison was made even more likely by the Pokédex entry in Pokémon Yellow, which suggests that Oddish screams similarly when people try to uproot him.
Oddish has quite a few upgrades that radically change his appearance. Evolving first into Poison and Gloom-type Herb at level 21, players can then choose between two final forms. Gloom can receive a Leaf Stone to evolve into Vileplume, or a Sun Stone to evolve into Bellossom. While Oddish has emerged as a potential savage encounter in entries as recent as Pokémon Sword and Shield, he could also be captured in the Sinnoh region.
